From the Dojo Floor: January 2010

We hope the first edition of "From the Dojo Floor" finds you well. Periodically (bimonthly) we will send you this in an E-newsletter and publish it on our web site, to keep you up-to-date and in the loop with what is happening with your Karate family at Seido Kazoku Dojo.

Last calendar year we were so happy to welcome John, Glenn, Luca, Tara, Aaron, Senpai Stuart, Melissa, Sophie, Vanessa, Louise, Greg, Jonathan, Elliot, Maree, Jibraan, Steven, Matt, Jibril and Mona to our Seido Kazoku family. We have all enjoyed teaching you and getting to know you over the past 12 months. John and Sophie returned after some absence, Senpai Stuart and his kids joined us from Broadway Dojo. All Welcome!

It was also fantastic to see & hear all the energy, hard work and dedication from the December grading candidates. With pleasure we congratulate Emma (Second Kyu), Vanessa (Junior Sixth Kyu), Glenn (Seventh Kyu), Louise, Greg, Marie, Elliot (Eighth Kyu) and Matt (Junior Eighth Kyu) who have promoted successfully to new Kyu grades. Great job! And we hope you look forward to the first classes of 2010 as you commence learning of your new syllabus.

In the 12 months of 2009 we were so proud to see the increase to our black belt numbers and those students who promoted further into the black belt ranks. We look back and remember Senpai Jamie and Senpai Dawson's promotions to Nidan in March. Senpai Maria's promotion to Sandan in July. Senpai Marcus' promotion to adult Shodan in September. And our newest Senpai, Senpai Imogen who promoted to junior Shodan in September as well. Great job!

Words of Wisdom

OSU. A multi-purpose phrase we use at the dojo an awful lot, but what does it mean? OSU in Japanese is formed from two characters O and Nin. O means to push, shove, press, squash, compress or stamp. When Nin in contrast means to bear, endure, resist, or put up with. Thus there is the conflict of forces. One force pushing, the other force resisting. Martial artists in Japan often use the sound OSU to express their attitude towards training. OSU is the verbalisation of the explicit concept of O-Nin, this sound is heard during the exchange of greeting between seniors and juniors, when entering the training hall, before performing Kata for review, and after receiving a pointer from the Sensei. Put simply, it means to be patient while undergoing the stress of training. Others added that it implies an attitude of seriousness and having or showing great self-control in adversity, its "no trouble, I will do it!" We encourage you to approach your Karate training with this very concept!
